Daily Devotional: Atonement for the Individual

Bible Reading Today: Leviticus 4:27-35

If a member of the community sins unintentionally against the Lord’s commands, he must bring a female goat without defect and offer it as a sin offering. If he offers up a lamb, it must be a female lamb without defect. By making the sin offering, he will be forgiven.

Applications
  • No one is exempt from dealing with their sin. Even the seemingly least among us are required to recognize our sin & seek forgiveness before the Lord.

  • We ought to have a more serious and biblical view of sin. It should break our hearts as it breaks God’s. We should see it as having impact on not just ourselves, but also the wider community. Yet praise God that in His Son, we have atonement and the sacrifice that cleanses us completely.

Daily Devotional: Atonement for the Community and Leaders

Bible Reading Today: Leviticus 4:13-26

If the Israelite community sins unintentionally against the Lord’s commands and becomes aware of it, the assembly must offer up a young bull as a sin offering. If any of the leaders sins unintentionally and becomes aware of it, he must offer up a male goat without defect as a sin offering.

Applications
  • Christians are now a royal priesthood. As Israel was called to be holy to the Lord and serve as witnesses, that mandate now falls to the Church. Thus, we must be on our guard so that we do not go astray, veering away from the Lord.

  • We ought to be praying for our political leaders who govern and serve our country. While they may not all be Christians, we are instructed that they are not there by arbitrary randomness, but are placed there by God in His sovereignty.

Daily Devotional: Atonement for the High Priest

Bible Reading Today: Leviticus 4:1-12

If an anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he is to take a young bull without defect and offer it as a sin offering. He is to lay his hand on the head of the offering, slaughter it before the Lord, and burn it upon the altar as a burnt offering according to the ceremonial laws.

Applications
  • The dawning awareness of inadvertent sin is the experience of believers, both new and old. Once such guilt is realized, confessing the sin and receiving forgiveness becomes important. Do you have any sin that you have become aware of and need to confess and repent of today?

  • The sins of the high priest were no private matter. In a similar way, while Christian leaders today do not function as high priests, their failures are public and have repercussions on the Christian community. This gives added urgency for us to pray for our spiritual leaders.

Daily Devotional: Fellowship with God

Bible Reading Today: Leviticus 3:1-17

The fellowship offering is to be a bull or sheep without defect, male or female, or a goat. After laying one’s hand on the head of the offering, one is to offer it up as a burnt offering according to the ceremonial laws. All the fat is the Lord’s; God commands that fat and blood are not to be eaten.

Applications
  • Symbolized by the fat and kidneys, those who drew near to God with the peace offering were offering up to God their best, their greatest strength and deepest emotions of gratitude. We too ought to give God the best of all we are.

  • We are to have fellowship characterized by genuine care for each other’s needs. We are also to be a God-centered community that overflows in joyful worship of God. And in Christ, we are to rest assured that our present and future is secure in Him, resulting in praise to God.

Daily Devotional: The Grain Offering

Bible Reading Today: Leviticus 2:1-16

The grain offering is to be of the finest flour. After pouring oil and incense upon it, a memorial portion is taken and burned on the altar as a burnt offering. What is left of the grain offering is most holy. All grain offerings must not have any yeast or honey in it, and they must be seasoned with salt.

Applications
  • Once again, what is your attitude in worship? Do you offer your very best when you come before the Lord? Is the “oil” or presence of God evident in your personal or corporate worship?

  • Jesus calls us to be the salt of the earth. Do others thirst for God when they are around you? Do they sense His preservation over you? Be careful of even the smallest sin that might enter your heart. That small sin could quickly expand and take hold of every part of your heart.
